THE CANAL. – The first packet boat from Richmond reached Lynchburg at 11 o’clock last Thursday morning. Among the passengers was Col. Ellis, the efficient President of the canal compay. The canal is now open to that point, and there is no interruption to travel by the route. We have been pleased to learn that the French company which had purchased the work of which he is President, just previous to the commencement of hostilities, still claim their contract, the fulfilment of which, they say, was alone prevented by the war; and are prepared and anxious to take charge of the canal at once. The present officers are warmly in favor fo the transfer, and we hope it will be effected.
