From the Richmond Dispatch, 6/1/1868, p. 1, c. 3

GENERAL SCHOFIELD LEAVES RICHMOND. – General Schofield will undoubtedly accept the office of Secretary of War. He left Richmond for Washington on Saturday morning, accompanied by Colonel J. A. Campbell and Lieutenant Rathbone, of his personal staff. Colonel Wherry will leave this morning, and it is understood that Colonel Campbell will return to report to the General who is to be assigned to duty here.

The papers, &c., at headquarters are ready to be turned over to General Schofield’s successor when he shall make his appearance. In the meantime the office is in charge of Colonel S. F. Chalfin, Assistant Adjutant-General.

Before his departure Saturday morning, General Schofield was waited upon by a number of well-known citizens, who expressed their belief that he had carried out the reconstruction laws faithfully, but had borne as lightly as possible upon the people. The General said that he would always remember with pleasure his Virginia experience.
