From the Richmond Dispatch, 6/1/1881, p. 2, c. 2

…Some six or seven hundred persons were on the grounds of the National cemetery at City Point yesterday during the memorial exercises, which were conducted under the immediate direction of Farragut Post, No. 1, G. A. R., of Portsmouth. The address of Major Dezendorf was commended for its moderate and conciliatory spirit. Each of the 1,400 unknown graves received a wreath – which number had been prepared for that especial purpose by direction of Captain Schmitz, the flag officer of the monitor fleet. Mrs. Captain Marthon took the 151 Confederate graves under her special charge and placed a wreath upon each of them.
